Political parties and the reconstruction after losing elections. Part I

Losing power represents a process, per se, that can lead your political party into opposition. But what were the causes that led your political entity into such a result? In this part, we are going to explore the reflection and past blockage components.

The reflection process after losing

Without a reflection process, you cannot see further down the path towards reform or other necessary steps needed to be taken. What led to the downfall?  Was it a specific topic of great importance for the public, of course, in terms of public policy, or was it a specific case of a person/group within the party that approved certain corruption acts, this being a narrow example, or was it the way in which the political apparatus was organized and led?

The first step – we should look at the party`s promoted positions on certain public policy and see what went wrong, or identify the person/group that inflicted damage on the overall image of the party.

Second step – communicate with the public about that cause and explain the measures foreseen in order to improve the situation.

Third step – improve the internal situation within the party in order to provide results and communicate those results.

The reflection process is just a threshold that must be crossed to revive your position on the national political scene.

Possible past blockages

Sometimes, parties need to manage large bureaucracies where decision makers are surrounded by large groups of civil servants and interest groups. The management of blockages within the apparatus is crucial; without a clear attitude, you cannot move forward towards improving legislation or other measures needed at a certain time in your governing period. Without communicating those situations – legislative or bureaucratic blockages – you will end up in a clot that will lead you towards bad results in elections (especially if such a blockage comes up near the election term).

You should properly identify the structural blockage that prevents your faction from obtaining a certain result. You cannot afford to have such blockages for long periods; measures should be taken through the appointment of persons close to your vision goals in certain positions of leadership within administrative bodies that might host future blockages. Furthermore, you might have to change certain procedures that could affect the envisioned results.
