The European People`s Party remains one of the most influential political group in the European Parliament. This group brings under its umbrella Christian democratic and center-right parties from across Europe. Such a broad membership allows the group to perform well in elections, but also to have a meaningful impact on decision-making procedures.
The Mission of the EPP is centered around the following elements:
- Building a Europe where everyone can be successful;
- Foster a united Europe which respects subsidiarity;
- Promote the values of human dignity, freedom, solidarity and the respect for human rights and the rule of law.
It is important to remark that the EPP constantly supported the idea of a strong common foreign and security policy, but also the EU enlargement process with countries that meet the necessary criteria.
The decreasing trend in the votes of the centrist groups EPP, S&D and Renew, observed since 2009, should continue in the next European elections (2024) and therefore we should witness a more dynamic electoral campaign in 2024 – implying a stronger effort for the parties involved, especially for the Euroskeptics.
It is clear that the EPP will continue to play a relevant role in policy-making at the level of the EU, but this political group will need to adapt to changes that affect the global arena. This includes addressing issues such as climate change, digital transformation, and the impact of globalization. The party’s ability to respond to emerging challenges and propose innovative policy solutions will be vital in order to its appeal to voters across Europe.
Another aspect is that the EPP’s ties with member states will continue to remain important. The party needs to engage with national governments and political parties to foster cooperation and promote its agenda at both the European and national levels. Only through strong alliances and continued dialogue will the EPP maintain its position as one of the most important European political forces.
