On October 4, 2025, Mrs. Sanae Takaichi was elected president of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), becoming the first woman ever to hold that position in the party’s history. The LDP has an impressive history, governing Japan for nearly all of its post‐war era. The election of Mrs. Takaichi represents a landmark in the country’s political history.
She first entered politics in 1992, running as an independent candidate in a parliamentary election but was unsuccessful. She kept going and secured a seat in 1993, she joined the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in 1996. Remarkably, she has won ten parliamentary elections—losing only once—and earned a reputation as one of the LDP’s most relevant conservative figures.
She has also served in key government positions, including minister for economic security, state minister for trade and industry, and held a record-breaking tenure as minister for internal affairs and communications.
By promoting a conservative approach, she might be able to win some of the electorate that previously opted for the Sanseitō party, which is on the far-right of the Japanese political scene – some compare it with Trumpism in the United States.
A protégé of the late Shinzo Abe and a long-standing supporter of his “Abenomics” economic strategy, Mrs.Takaichi has advocated for increased government spending and tax reductions to ease the burden of the rising cost of living.
She might become Japan`s first female prime minister, which for sure will represent a relevant leap in the political life of this country.
